Writing
By writing on my blog, I share what I wish someone else had written for
me: novel ideas, undocumented experiences, and detailed guides.
For my personal website, I wanted to break into
front-end web
development and build a static, fully-responsive page from scratch.
Technologies/Domains: Website Development, UI/UX Design, Figma,
Bulma,
HTML/SCSS.
I started designing the project in Figma. Over the course of 1-2 weeks, I explored different directions,
went through multiple iterations, and distilled the most important information I wanted to share.
Eventually, I
decided on using parallelograms and vibrant gradients as the main design elements of my medium.
After many previous not-so-pleasant attempts at writing CSS, I doubled down on my research to make the
design-to-html process as painless as possible while preserving fidelity. I
considered Bulma and Tailwind, and chose the former as my CSS framework because of its completeness and
focus on responsive design. After teaching myself the basics, I started coding the design. In order
to not reinvent the wheel, I leveraged bulma-modal-fx and glide.js for modals and
carousels.
After another week of continous coding, copywriting, resizing assets and debugging, I produced what you now
see.
Google Code-In
Winner
In 2018, I was selected as the first Grand-Prize Winner
from Mauritius for Drupal from 3550 students in Google Code-in, a global programming
competition for high-school students.
Over the course of 7 weeks, I completed 22 tasks that involved Programming, Design, Documentation/Training,
Outreach/Research, & Quality Assurance.
My most notable accomplishments were:
Creating Social Auth Reddit, Amazon, and Discord. Today, these modules have ~1000 combined downloads.
Porting Gist Input Filter and other modules to Drupal 8
Fixing various bugs/issues in Drupal Core and community modules
Creating new documentation for Social Auth Twitter among others.
Renewing Google Code-in students' documentation and migrating it to the new Drupal.org documentation
system.
Designing a new logo for the Social Initiative project, attached below:
Thanks to my participation, I learned PHP, Drupal, Git,
and gained valuable insights into open-source programming practices.
As part of my reward, I was flown to Google HQ, San Francisco, where I got to attend talks by Googlers and
connect with terrific people all over the world.
Google Code-In was a major turning point in my life.
Currently, I give back by mentoring students, both online in the contest, and offline through workshops and
programming sessions.
Studento
In 2018, I started Studento, a student-assistant mobile
app, as my entry for the National
Science Quest by RGSC. It ended up winning the Gold Prize in the highest category from 600+ students.
Technologies/Domains: Mobile App Development, UI/UX Design, Flutter,
Android, Figma.
Studento's main aim is to reduce the friction CIE students faced during exam preparation and daily routines.
With that in mind, it included the following features:
Easy access to O/A Level past papers and marking schemes (within 15 seconds, compared to online sites
that took >5 minutes and lot more effort)
A concise schedule system for each day's classes
Easy access to each subject's syllabi
A todo-list for keeping track of events, homework, and deadlines.
I continued working on the prototype and released the full-fledged app on the Play Store at the start of
2020. It currently has over a thousand monthly users who have accesss to virtually every CIE subject, a 4.7
rating, and a lot more downloads.
MoHack Organizer
In 2017, after being frustrated with the lack of
platforms for students to engage with tech, I started MoHack.
MoHack is now a recurring part of my life as I continue to host the largest student hackathon in Mauritius
each year. As the main
organizer, my responsibilities and tasks include(d):
Procuring sponsors for covering costs and providing hackathon winners with prizes.
Creating the MoHack brand identity, sponsorship prospectus, and all other physical & digital promotional
materials.
Creating the official MoHack landing page and registration form/flow.
Managing all logistics and email communications with participants.
Hosting the event, delivering keynotes, and mentoring participants.
Creatist Space
In 2017, the biggest online creative community of
creatives in Mauritius hosted a design contest as they required a new name and brand identity.
My submission-- Creatist Space-- was selected to be among the jury's top-3.
Technologies/Domains: Photoshop, Illustrator, Branding
